Everyone in Asheville is thinking about gas mileage nowadays. How can you tell if your car is getting good mileage? Do you really need to use an online gas mileage calculator? We want you to make an informed choice when you buy your next new car, so we’ve put together this easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide on how to calculate gas mileage.

How to Calculate Gas Mileage the Easy Way

Calculating gas mileage is easy to do, and an online gas mileage calculator isn’t really necessary. Most Hendersonville drivers have found that most of the work involves jotting down the right numbers. After that, it’s just a matter of some grade school-level math. Here are the steps:

How to Calculate Gas Mileage: Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Completely fill your gas tank.
  2. Reset the trip odometer to zero or note of the exact mileage.
  3. Drive until your tank is almost empty.
  4. Fill the tank again and make a note of how many gallons it takes to fill the tank.
  5. Note from your odometer how many miles you’ve driven since you filled up the first time.
  6. Take the number of miles driven and divide by the number of gallons pumped at your last fill-up. Alternatively, you could enter all of the numbers you gathered from the steps above into an online gas mileage calculator.

How Do You Know If You’re Getting Good Gas Mileage?

So, you’ve calculated the exact gas mileage your car is getting using the steps below. Great! But how do you know whether the gas mileage you’re getting is good or not? Here are some general guidelines:

  • Small compact cars should be able to get over 30 miles per gallon on the highway.
  • Larger SUVs do well to get over 20 miles per gallon
  • Hybrids can get over 40 miles per gallon or more
  • Plug-in hybrids can reach the equivalent of nearly 100 miles per gallon
  • All-wheel drive vehicles are usually not quite as fuel-efficient as their 2WD counterparts
  • Many models come with multiple engine options, and generally, the least powerful engine will also get the best gas mileage.
